Discount Power is an electricity provider that began operation in Texas in 2008. They service both residential as well as commercial customers in the deregulated areas of Texas.

About Discount Power

Discount Power started in the Texas market in early 2008. Struggling through the Great Recession, it gradually gained 800 customers in 6 years. In 2014, the company was bought by Volterra Energy Holdings and in four years Volterra transformed Discount Power into what both the both the Houston Business Journal and Inc. Magainze called #1 fastest-growing private companies in the United States. By 2018, Discount Power had grown to approximately 115,000 customers in Texas. And that fall, NRG Energy, the biggest seller of electricity in Texas, acquired the Discount Power brand.

Discount Power has continued to grow, delivering reliable and affordable energy to Texas homes and businesses with no hidden fees or surprise charges. They leave out a lot of the gimmicky and usage-juggling plans other providers offer and instead focus on providing on no-frills, affordable energy with simple billing and good account management tools.

Why is my electricity rate higher than when I signed up?

The rate you see when you sign up is the average rate at that exact amount of usage in one billing cycle.

Some companies try to game the system by applying bill credits between certain usage thresholds. It works great if you are within the margins, but as soon as you leave that band you no longer get that bill credit and your rate per kWh can double. The PUC only requires that companies disclose their average rates at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWhs. Companies can get around this by giving you a $50 bill credit if you use between 1000 and 2000 kWhs per billing cycle.

The only way to really know what you're getting into is to read your EFL. A 10¢ rate at all usage amounts may end up being cheaper than that 8¢ rate at 1,000 kWh!

Are Green Electric Rates Lower in Dallas?

Green Electric Rates in Dallas Can Be Cheaper Too

Green electric plans in Dallas are usually as cheap as regular fossil fuel plans. Find out how you can save green by buying green!
Did you know 100% green electric plans in Dallas can be cheaper than those fossil plans? Find out how you can save money and save the environment!

With the statewide average for renewable content at only 25% in Texas, it can be hard to find lower green electric rates in Dallas. But, green energy isn’t just better for the planet. It can also be better for your wallet.

The Cheapest Dallas Non-Renewable Electric Rates

The cheapest fixed-term non-renewable Dallas electric rate right now is TriEagle Energy’s Sure Value 24. This fixed 24-month contract offers a 13.4 cents per kWh rate. Once you use 1000 kWh of electricity, you’ll receive a bill credit for $30. After the Oncor TDU charges, this bill credit can lower the average rate for 1000 kWh to only 10.9 cents per kWh.

However, if you don’t use 1000 kWh worth of electricity every month, this plan isn’t the cheapest fixed-rate non-renewable deal in Dallas. This is why you need to compare tiered rate and bill credit plans before you choose a plan.

Discount Power’s Saver 24 fixed-term non-renewable contract offers a cheap 11.7 cents per kWh rate, including the base charge and TDU charges. With the 7.48 cents per kWh energy usage, the Saver 24 is a safer option and a better deal overall. The early termination fee for Saver 24 is $200, however, this fee doesn’t apply if you’re terminating due to a move.

The Cheapest Dallas Green Electric Rates

Rythm’s Simply Green 30 isn’t just a lower electric rate in Dallas, it’s also 100% green and renewable. This 30-month contract also offers an 11.7 cent per kWh rate for 1000 kWh usage. However, since there’s no base charge, the actual energy charge is only 7.38 cents per kWh. If you cancel this contract after the first 90 days, the termination fee will be $10 for each remaining month.

Energy Texas offers a similar deal with their Bigger Than Texas 24. At an 11.9 cents per kWh rate, this 24-month fixed-rate plan is 100% renewable. While the base charge and the TDU charges raise your monthly bill, the energy rate is only 7.17 cents per kWh. Which is the lowest base energy rate out of all four of these plans. The Bigger Than Texas 24’s termination fee is $200 unless the reason for the termination is moving.

Are Green Electric Rates Lower Than Non-Renewable Rates in Dallas?

Saver 24 and Simply Green 30 have very similar rates. The estimated monthly bill for a household with 1000 kWh usage comes to $117 for both plans. However, Green 30 has a lower energy rate and no base charge. So, if you use less than 1000 kWh every month, it’s also an overall lower electric rate in Dallas.

While Simply Green 30 has a longer contract term, the fact that it’s 100% renewable content can make it a more attractive choice for environmentally conscious customers in Texas

What Is the Cheapest 12 Month Electric Rate in Dallas Right Now?

You really can save on electric rates in Dallas. Let us show you the top rated plans are on offer!
Finding lower priced electric plans in the spring is usually pretty confusing. To help, we've sorted out plans that can help you save on rates each month!

With spring inching closer, you may be wondering how you can save on electric bill rates in Dallas. With so many plans out there, it’s hard to choose the best one. That’s why we found the four cheapest plans for you in Dallas, so you find the best one for you and save on your electric bill rates.

Save With These Low Priced Electricity Rates

Right now, the cheapest 12-month fixed-price electric plan in Dallas is Free Weekends-12 by Champion Energy Services. With this plan, you’re only paying for the electricity you use during the week. On the weekend, you won’t be charged for usage. The free period starts on Friday at 12:00 AM and lasts until Sunday at 11:59 PM.

During the paid period, you’ll be charged 11.4 cents per kWh along with the TDU charges. On average, 70% of your usage occurs during the week. So, assuming your monthly usage is an average 1000 kWh, this plan will come to 12.2 cents per kWh overall. This means that your estimated monthly bill would be around $110.

A cool perk about this plan is its cash-back program. With the Free Weekends-12 plan, you’ll get 5% of your electricity use during the paid period applied as a credit to your next month’s bill.

Save on the Cheapest Fixed-Rate Electric Bill Rates in Dallas

Come & Take It 12 from Energy Texas has a low electric rate of 11.8 cents. With average usage, this brings your estimated monthly bill to only $118; plus it's 100% renewable.

Champ Saver 12 by Champion Energy Services also has a low rate for Dallas residents. Their supply rate is just 7.8 cents per kWh, so with the TDU charges that comes out to 12.1 cents per kWh. This means your estimated monthly electric bill with this plan would come to $120.

Discount Power offers a very similar deal. Their Value Plus 12 fixed-rate 12-month plan also features a 12.1 cents per kWh rate. However, the Value Plus 12 has a slightly higher supply charge rate of 7.8882 cent's per kwh. Factor in the TDU charges and this means that your average monthly bill would also be higher at $121.

The Cancellation Fee for the Cheapest Fixed-Rate Electric Plans

All four of these cheap 12-month electric plans have the same cancellation fee. If you decide to terminate your contract early or switch to a new provider, you may be liable to pay a $150 fee.

What Happens at the End of Your Contract?

You’ll receive a renewal notice from your provider before the end of your contract where they tell you what your options are, and what happens after the contract ends. If you don’t renew your contract or switch to a new plan, they’ll move you to their default renewal product. This can be quite expensive as it’s usually a month-to-month plan.

That’s why it’s a good idea to shop for a cheap electric provider in the Oncor service area before your contract ends.
